F Student Visa
F-1 visa is applicable for persons coming to the U.S. to study
full time at an educational institution approved by the Department
of Homeland Security (DHS). In order to apply for this visa, one
should have applied for admission and obtained an I-20 from a U.S.
educational institution that is participating in the Student and
Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
F-2 visas are issued to spouse and
children of F-1 visa holders.
Student visa holders can work under
limited circumstances. They can work on campus, obtain permission to
work on the basis of curricular practical training before graduation
and also work under optional post completion practical training
after graduation.

J Exchange Visitor Visa
The "J" visa
is for foreign nationals enrolled in educational and cultural
exchange programs designated by the Department of State, Bureau of
Consular Affairs, and the "Q" visa applies to
international cultural exchange programs designated by the U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The sponsoring
organization must also be participating in Student and Exchange
Visitor Information System (SEVIS) administered by the Department of
Homeland Security. Examples of activities for which one can obtain a
J-1 visa include exchange scholars, post-doctoral researchers, and
recipients of short-term academic research fellowships, medical
residents and trainees in education business and sciences.
J-1 visas are issued to the Exchange
Visitor while J-2 visas are issued to spouse and children of the
Exchange Visitor. J-2 visa holders are eligible to apply for work
authorization.
